For sure, ALL relationships have boundaries, often never defined, but each person in the relationship can tell you what they are when questioned privately by a neutral third party. Even married life partners each have secrets that they will never tell the other. For competitors, each one needs companionship and social connectedness, all while keeping details of their physical and mental health secret, preventing use of those details from being used against them. It's the paradox of "no man is an island" while simultaneously giving recognition to the reality that all and each of us is very much an island.

Thank you for answering my question about friendships on tour! I’m glad it proved to be complex. 😎 Your answer, as always, was nuanced and insightful. And I’m so sorry your skies are gray. Here’s hoping that your next makes me happy segment describes the return of sunshine for you! ☀️

Musically, I recommend Djo’s (pronounced Joe) “Basic being Basic.” He’s also an actor. But this song is a Gen Z take down in a very clever, funny and catchy way. Try Sirius XM’s Alt Nation. I get all my new music from their DJs.

Yep, if the definition of "unforced" is an "error by a pro in a match which they would make in practice" then I would say the number of unforced errors in a match is close to zero. If one would disagree, go to a tournament where the practice courts are set up for easy viewing and see how often the pros miss when they are hitting with each other, at pretty much the same pace as in matches. I have always thought unforced errors are a silly statistic, and I don't know who calculates them. "Winners" by comparison, is a pretty easy statistic and has meaning. As Andrea's answer shows, there is a lot more to missing in a match than simply can the player make the shot otherwise.

Hi Andrea - I know you’ve written 2 novels (in German) but have you ever considered writing a novel in English. Your writing on Substack is so good - why not give it a try? P.S. I spent a night in Darmstadt 2 years ago and was impressed by the town but horrified by the trucks on the roads in and out.

Punk-Jazz actually does exist; John Zorn, I once saw him in Milano, Italy, playing Punk-Rock-Jazz in front a thousand people and years later in a small intimate club in NYC, playing Jazz in front of maybe 10 people, dressed somewhere in between an Orthodox Jew and an heavy metal headbanger!

The question of being friends on the tour leads to another question. If you become very friendly with another player (Sabalenka and Badosa come to mind), how difficult is it to play a good buddy?

As a Jazz aficionado jazz musicians are probably some of the most talented musicians. The breadth of their knowledge is limitless.
