Two comments. First, some medical conditions also affect cognitive function. In these cases, although the person is suffering and might be aware of it, the person might not be able to think well enough to ask for help or even help herself. I have such a condition, and I have been a USTA official. I would give the chair umpire grace in this case, because it seemed to me from watching from afar that Sinner's situation wasn't limited to his physical symptoms. He seemed only to be able to keep on for lack of ability to think of anything else to do, including both seek medical attention or retire. Even if Sinner were to respond to my comment that this was not the case, I would still think the umpire did the right thing to find out rather than let the player unwittingly compromise his overall physical and mental health in a way that might be permanent.

I would hope that any player exhibiting similar cognitive symptoms would be treated the same by this umpire. When people are talking about unfair treatment, it seems to me that the individual differences between

the umpires might be the thing that matters more than the rank of the player involved. I suspect that Serena would agree.

Second, to Andrea alone--Va, va, voom!!! You were seriously rocking that dress with the hip cut out! Naomi isn't the only one bringing fashion to the French!

First of all, stop downplaying yourself Andrea! You are and always have been an amazing tennis player, the no. 9 says it all :)

I think it’s safe to say that all tennis fans were devastated after the Sinner-Scenario. The umpires job is always such a difficult topic in my opinion. I’ve also played volleyball for some time and of course many refs make wrong or unfair calls, but we always have to think about if the call was just unfair for the player (because of health as in this case) or if it was an unfair or wrong call in general after the rules. I think the timeouts that you mentioned would be a really good solution for the insane heat waves at the moment and for the players support in general, so that’d be a start. And I think it would shine a better light on the umpires and their sympathy as well :)
