Its very subtle, and only people who have played a certain amount of serious tennis will get it, but yes, there is a an absolute state of mind where a player is not full on tanking but in fact, mentally, has reached a state where they would rather the match end, even if it is a loss, than do what it takes to stay out there. Freud jokes or no, that's a real thing. And its intersting, because it is not as if you want to lose, but its more like you get resigned to losing if it means the mental torture will cease for the day. Sometimes its physical, but more often than not pure Freudian mental. ")

Loved the article. Thank you. Reminds me of some gems from some tennis teaching gurus somewhere... a tennis match is a series of emergencies; and, in a battle of relative equals, whoever can function under the stress - Andrea, your Freudian death wish - the longest will win. Sometimes you can see on a player's face that they would rather be anywhere than there and they can't wait to get off the court. They often get their wish.
