Another awesome column Andrea, thank you! And you’ll be pleased to know the disgusting humidity blanket here in Sydney has finally lifted into a pleasant warm autumn.

If there is _zwangspause_ there must be _zwangspiel_ where one is obliged to play? I like the idea of finding a German compound word to describe tennis's goings on: German is so happy to build words as if the pieces were Lego. I think I know what German compound word Iga would use for her performance against Svitolina. The second half would be "spiel" but the first half would get a fine for audible obscenity.

Do you have any insight into what's happened with Paolini?

Do you have convos with McEnroe, given his art collecting history? Other than personality frictions, seems like you two could be kindred spirits.

Also, yes to your conclusions about defense versus offense, both individual player analysis and compared to "the old days". Lendl, Sampras, Edburg, Becker primarily won by offense, as did Capriati, Graf, and Navratilova. Defense won matches for Chang, Hingis, Agassi, and Kerber. Many of those players could struggle today against more rounded opponents. I would, however, add to the complexity of the O/D discussion by suggesting a third, gray area of style: the pusher, someone who was simply content to play "one more ball", with no real intent to outright hit winners. Here I think you find Chris Evert, Mats Vilander, and a host of Spanish players including Arantxa.

Big fan of Ivan Navarro… he had a show in Savannah years ago called “Heaven or Las Vegas” with a series of his neon, mirrored light boxes that pull you into infinity. I will have to look up his newest show!
